It Ends With Us By Colleen Hoover: Book vs. Movie

Was the book better than the movie?

In 2016, Colleen Hoover published a book titled "It Ends With Us," which follows Lily Bloom and her domestically abusive relationship. Little did Hoover know that this groundbreaking novel inspired by her mother's story, would soon take over the book world, becoming the bestselling novel of both 2022 and 2023 (Onion, 2024).
In 2019, actor Justin Baldoni, most famously known as Rafael in the TV show "Jane the Virgin", partnered with Hoover to turn the best-selling novel into a film. Justin Baldoni was extremely moved by the novel, "It Ends with Us," stating that it needed to be turned into a film because it "could actually make a difference," (Thomas, 2024).
Fans of the book were extremely excited about the book being reimagined into a film and even more excited to see if the film would do the novel justice. "It Ends with Us" has changed the lives of many people who have read the book, and many were excited to see how many more lives would be changed after watching the film.
With that being said, after the release of the movie earlier this year, many fans and critics of the book were extremely disappointed by the changes made in the film. Many watchers stated that the film felt much more muted due to the changes made. Small differences in the film such as the name of Atlas' restaurant, the exclusion of emotional scenes, and the ages of the characters, left watchers to believe that domestic violence was not portrayed nearly as well as it was in the book.
When reimagining a novel into a film, there is a usual wave of criticism from book readers to be expected. Many believe that the film should encapsulate the emotions felt in the book in the same manner. There are very few instances of book-to-film conversions that were not met with negative criticism and fans stating that the book was better. Sadly, "It Ends with Us" was not one of those films.
